Hoodia Gordonii, also commonly referred to as P57, is a cactus-like plant that grows in the deserts of Africa. It has been around for centuries, but only recently become popular in the U.S. and Europe. An anthropology report of the San Bushmen of the Kalahari desert detailed their uses of Hoodia Gordonii to ward off hunger and thirst during long hunting trips in the desert. This report was shown on the BBC network and then later on the TV news program 60 Minutes. At the time a pharmecutical company called Phytopharm held the patent license to hoodia gordonii. Phytopharm and the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, have spent over $20 million researching Hoodia Gordonii. They found that one steroidal glycoside was responsible for its weight-reducing properties. They named this glycoside P57.

Later the pharmecutical company Pfizer applied for a sub-license to sell hoodia as well. The sub license was granted and now many companies are selling various forms of Hoodia Gordonii and P57. Due to the great increse in demand, Hoodia Gordonii is now on the protected plant species list and a license must be obtained to export it from Africa.

Hoodia Gordonii can be taken in many forms. The most typical is pill form, but as marketing efforts grow so does the originality of the products. You can now buy hoodia shakes as well as hoodia-enriched lollipops.

Hoodia gordonii is the primary ingredient in the popular weightloss product Lipocerin. In addition to the Hoodia, Lipocerin contains many other natural ingredients which promote weight loss.
